Who can take part

Anyone, anywhere in the World can take part in the World record breaking attempt and enter the competitions, except professional photographers. The definition of a pro is someone who earns more than 10% of their income from photography.

Under 18's, you will need your parents' consent to take part.

How you can take part

Simple and easy....

Register on the website. You will automatically be given 1000 "free" credits when you confirm your email address.

Upload your photos. They must be .jpg files and less than 2MB in size.

Tell us your travel story or some more about the photo.

Buy additional credits to enter your photos into the Places Prize Fund. In fact, buy lots of credits because it's cheaper that way!

What you can upload

Photos must be of recognizable and identifiable places on earth. If you can't recognize the place from the photo, don't send it in!

Only submit photos that have been taken by you (you must own the copyright) and that have not won any other prizes or been published commercially.

Photos must not have been very obviously and visibly manipulated or digitally enhanced in any way through Photoshop or any other application, except for minor digital adjustments limited to cleaning work, levels, curves, colour, saturation and contrast work, applied to the image as a whole. Cropping the image is allowed.

Images that combine the elements of one or more photographs or have elements removed are not eligible. This includes sandwich shots, double exposures and photos which consist in any way of more than one separate image.

The Competitions

  1. Photo of the Month Awards

    All uploaded photos are automatically entered into the Photo of the Month awards for FREE.

    Votes only count towards the Photo of the Month awards. They do not get used to judge the entries in the Places Prize Fund.

    You can vote as often as you like, but the voting is restricted to one vote per photo per user.

    Voting will end 15 days after these competitions close.

    Each month, the entry that has received the highest number of votes in that month will become "Photo of the Month" and win a prize.

  2. Places Prize Fund

    Each entry into the Places Prize Fund costs 1 credit which you can purchase for just £1 or the equivalent in other currencies.

    The 1000 allocated "free" credits cannot to be used for entry into this competition.

    These competitions take place every 6 months.

    Any unused credits that you have purchased will be carried forward to the next 6 months.

    If you have uploaded more photos than the number of credits you have purchased, you can choose which photos you want entered into the Places Prize Fund.

    All entries in the Places Prize Fund will be judged by independent judges on eligibility criteria (uniqueness, identifiability, recognizability, legitimate place) and merit (quality, clarity, technique, etc.).

    The prize fund is based on the number of photos submitted within each 6 month period, with half the fund less 10% for fees being paid to the winner and the remainder less 10% going to the charity.

Prizes

All prize winners will be notified by email within 7 days.

Prizes are non-transferable.

Closing Date

The Competitions will initially run for 3 years until 16 January 2010 or until we have found a million unique places on Earth, whichever is the earlier.

Based on the number and uniqueness of photos received, we may re-open the competitions for a further 2 years and extend the closing date accordingly to 16 January 2012.

The closing date for the third Places Prize Fund is 16 January 2009.

Other

The World record attempt for the largest book will be published when we have reached our goal of a million unique places on earth.

The copyright of any photos submitted remains with the photographer. We protect your photos so they cannot get "stolen" by others.

Keep a copy of your photos and check that they've been uploaded to the website successfully. We will not return photos.

We do not refund entry fees unless the circumstances are exceptional.

Don't steal other people's photos and don't upload anything you shouldn't. They will be removed.
